Things To Do To A Spongy Brake Padal To Avoid Disasters

A spongy brake pedal is always a result of air in the brake line somewhere. This can be dangerous, especially if you need to break suddenly for any reason. There could be several reasons for a brake pedal to feel spongy when you step on it. Here's how you can check to find where the problem is, and correct it.

Fluid Levels
The first thing that you should check is the fluid levels. If they are low then that means that you are going to need to bleed out the brakes. The reservoir of the master cylinder needs to be filled completely. You will need to make sure that you get the right box end wrench so that you can get to the rear circuit bleeder valve. As you are doing this, you will need to get the fluid level maintained right around half full. You will need to get a transparent hose placed over your bleeder valve. The end of the hose should be submerged at the end with the clear container so that it is almost filled with brake fluid.

Have a Helper
It is always a good idea to have a helper nearby as you are doing this as you will need someone to press on the bake as you work on the bleeder valve. Have them keep a good solid pressure on the brake as you loosen up the bleeder valve so that air can be released from your brake line. You will need to repeat the aforementioned process until you no longer see any air bubbles. Do this with all of the brakes until they have all been checked.

If That Fails
If you have bled the system and it still does not work then do it all over again. There may simply still be air in the system. If that still does not do the trick then you may want to look through the brake lines to see if there are any tears or leaks. If you see one, then fix it and bleed the system once more. You will find that once you have exhausted all of these possible fixes that you may need to move on to the last and final step.

If you feel comfortable bleeding the system and replacing any hoses with leaks or tears then you should Follow this Steps Above. However, if it is something that you do not feel comfortable with then immediately go to a mechanic. A spongy brake pedal could result in your brakes failing when you need them.

Call Tow Truck
You may end up needing to have your vehicle towed to a mechanic. Make sure that you have a mechanic that you can trust and who knows about the situation. If you have a regular mechanic, call them up, tell them what you have done and see what they think the problem is. They will more than likely be able to get you set up with a tow truck that you can use to get your vehicle to them so that they will be able to attempt to fix the problem.
